Call for Papers RAAIT Workshop at HHAI 2024

2nd workshop on Responsible Applied Artificial Intelligence (RAAIT)

Organized at the third International Conference on Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence (HHAI), June 10-14 2024, Malmö, Sweden

HHAI2024 – HHAI2024 (hhai-conference.org)

Workshop date 11 June 2024.

Aim and scope

Artificial Intelligence (AI) increasingly affects the way people work, live, and interact. Over the past years, many high-level principles, and guidelines for ‘responsible’ or ‘ethical’ AI have been developed, and a lot of theoretical research on responsible AI has been done. However, this work often fails to address the challenges that arise when applying AI in practice.  In this one-day workshop on Responsible Applied Artificial InTelligence (RAAIT), we aim to connect and share experiences with fellow researchers and AI practitioners who bring Responsible AI to practice. Our vision on RAAIT includes the design, development, and deployment of Responsible AI applications in a practical context, while considering ethical, societal and ecological aspects. After keynote presentations from both research and industry, and participants’ paper presentations, we will use the afternoon to collectively discuss Responsible AI in practice, especially focusing on research methodologies. To guide the session, we will utilize and refine the Responsible Applied AI framework developed by the RAAIT research community. We invite both case studies, position papers, and research papers that address elements of a Responsible Applied AI practice.

Workshop format

In this one-day workshop on Responsible Applied Artificial InTelligence (RAAIT), we aim to connect and share experiences with fellow researchers and AI practitioners who bring Responsible AI to practice. We will build on our previous workshop hosted at ECAI 2023 (Summary). Besides regular sessions consisting of presentations of selected peer-reviewed papers, the programme will feature invited talks from research and industry and a workshop discussion in the closing session. We will lead an open discussion, in a workshop spirit, aimed to foresee the future of Responsible Applied AI and how to contribute to the field as a research community in the years to come.

Topics of interest

Contributions can address technological aspects of responsible applied AI but may also include social or socio-technical factors, such as the design process (e.g., through co-creation) or the organisational governance to ensure responsible application of AI. Research in all kinds of application domains is encouraged.

We will use the afternoon to collectively discuss Responsible AI in practice, especially focusing on research methodologies and validation techniques. To guide the session, we will utilize and refine the Responsible Applied AI framework developed by the RAAIT research community.

We invite both case studies, position papers, and research papers that address elements of a Responsible Applied AI practice, for example (but not limited to):

  • Case studies on eliciting ethical values and principles from stakeholders;
  • Translating ethical principles and values to practice;
  • How to deal with conflicting principles within a specific application / practical context;
  • Organisational transformation and mitigations required for RAAIT in practice;
  • What developers can do in each phase of the AI/ML-development cycle;
  • Research methodologies to validate Responsible AI tools;
  • Perspectives on the societal and ecological impact of AI research and applications.

Contributions can address technological aspects of responsible applied AI, but may also include social or socio-technical factors, such as the design process (e.g., through co-creation) or the organizational governance to ensure responsible application of AI. Research in a broad range of application domains is encouraged.

A non-exhaustive list of topics includes:

  • Case studies on eliciting ethical values and principles from stakeholders;
  • Translating ethical principles and values to practice;
  • How to deal with conflicting principles within a specific application / practical context;
  • Organisational transformation and mitigations required for RAAIT in practice;
  • What developers can do in each phase of the AI/ML-development cycle.
  • Insights into ecological impacts of AI-systems.

We invite case studies, position papers, and research papers that address elements of a Responsible Applied AI practice. Published and unpublished works are welcome.
